Keynote Panel: Perspectives On the Importance of POWA for the Utility Industry

As grid complexity grows and the utility industry shifts toward data-driven decision-making, Point-on-Wave Analytics (POWA) has emerged as a transformative tool for unlocking deep insights into grid behavior. This keynote panel brings together leading voices in policy, research, and applied technology to discuss the strategic significance of POWA and its potential to reshape utility operations, planning, and resilience.

Bruce Walker

Bruce Walker, former Assistant Secretary for the Office of Electricity at the U.S. Department of Energy , brings a national and regulatory perspective, reflecting on the role of high-fidelity grid data in driving modernization and reliability at scale.

Dr. Bill Howe

Dr. Bill Howe, Director of Data Science at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), brings a perspective of the challenges and opportunities of operationalizing point-on-wave data at utility scale, with a focus on interoperability and power quality.

Dr. Hamed Mohsenian-Rad

Dr. Hamed Mohsenian-Rad, Professor of Electrical Engineering at UC Riverside and a leading researcher in smart grid communications and signal processing, will provide a research based lens on the applications of POWA for grid anomaly detection, asset health monitoring, and advanced protection schemes.

Jim Glass

Jim Glass, Asisstant VP of Smart Grid Operations at EPB, offers a practical, utility-side perspective on the implementation and value of point-on-wave data analytics. As a leader behind one of the most advanced smart grid deployments in the United States, Jim brings deep operational insight into how EPB leverages high-resolution data to improve grid reliability, reduce outage durations.

Dr. Ellery Blood

Dr. Ellery Blood, SEL, brings deep technical expertise at the forefront of digital power system innovation. With over a decade leading advanced research and development at one of the most prominent vendors of power systems montiroing equipment, Dr. Blood plays a pivotal role in defining and implementing solutions that leverage point‑on‑wave data for enhanced system protection, automation , and situational awareness.

Vendor Workshops

Following the conference on October 8th the following Vendors of Point On Wave equipment and software will hold tutorials and talk about use of their tools to measure, collect, manage and analyze point on wave data.
